Summary:Mechanical engineer and inventor Edward Tunstel was born on November 29, 1963 in Harlem, New York. His childhood interest in art and architecture, his curiosity and a high school seminar at the New York Academy of Sciences led him to engineering. He graduated from Springfield Gardens High School in New York in 1981, receiving his B.S. and M.E. degrees in mechanical engineering from Howard University in 1989. Tunstel was recruited by the Jet Propulsion League (JPL) of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). With their support, he attended the University of New Mexico, receiving his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 1996. Tunstel continued to work with the JPL in various roles. One of his larger projects was the Mars Exploration Rovers. Tunstel has written many articles on the subjects of robotics and intelligent control. He was recognized for his contributions to the science of robotics and space exploration.
