520 |a Nonprofit executive and educator Gail Hansberry was born on September 4, 1939 in Washington, D.C. Her mother, Myrtle Kelso, was a social worker and her father, William Leo Hansberry, a scholar of Ancient African History. Hansberry received her B.A. degree in art from Howard University and her M.A. degree in art history from Smith College. In 1962, Hansberry worked at the National Gallery of Art and Taft Junior High School before she was appointed as instructor of art history at North Carolina Central University. Hansberry became a researcher for Time-Life Books in 1967, and served as an English language officer in the U.S. Department of State. From 1990 to 1992, she served as executive director of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Hansberry's art is housed at the New York Public Library Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and the Library of Congress. Hansberry is the cousin of African American playwright, Lorraine Hansberry.
