The workshop also included content on self-care and wellness. The workshop is referred to as the Nurse Advance. Focus group methodology was utilized to understand nurses' experience with the Nurse Advance. The study explored nurses experience of the Nurse Advance and how the targeted intervention impacted participants' sense of engagement with nursing practice and profession and with their employment setting. Focus group data was analyzed and coded for categories. These categories were further consolidated into themes for interpretation. Six themes emerged from the data: 1) Reconnecting with professional purpose; 2) Building professional affinity; 3) Breaking down departmental silos; 4) Building confidence in senior leadership; 5) Investing in staff development; and 4) Caring for the caregiver. These themes revealed that overall nurses experienced the Nurse Advance as strengthening their engagement with nursing practice, the profession of nursing, and with their organization, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Nurses expressed that sharing personal clinical experiences in a face to face setting with nurses from other parts of the organization was engaging on multiple levels. They described it as bringing them back to their professional purpose, and as building a sense of professional affinity. They also described the experience as building a sense of organizational community, and particularly felt valued by the level of resource investment made by the organization. They additionally felt that the portion of the program focused on self-care was valuable and supportive. And finally, they indicated that the physical presence of nursing leadership at the Nurse Advance, and hospital leadership generally in other contexts was a measure of the value leaders placed in them. | |
