Summary:Mathematician and professor Eleanor Jones was born on August 10, 1929 in Norfolk, Virginia. Jones received both her B.S. and M.S. degrees in mathematics from Howard University in 1949 and 1950, respectively. She taught at Hampton University as an associate professor of mathematics for eight years before attending Syracuse University. Jones graduated in 1966 from Syracuse University, becoming the eleventh African American women to earn her Ph.D. degree in mathematics. In 1967, Jones joined Norfolk State University as full professor and chair of the mathematics department. Jones was vice president of the National Association of Mathematicians in 1975 and served on the Executive Board for the Association of Women in Mathematics from 1989 to 1994. She served on the Board of Governors for the Mathematical Association of America, and received the National Association of Mathematicians' Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. She retired as professor emeritus from Norfolk State University in 2003.
