520 |a Association executive and educator Bernice Irene Sumlin was born on November 29, 1926, in Dayton, Ohio. As the 19th International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority, Sumlin served from 1974 until 1978. Her administration focused on addressing problems facing women and minorities. In addition, she implemented the Sorority's famous Reading Experience and the recognition of the Golden Sorors. Sumlin was initiated into the Zeta Chapter of AKA at Wilberforce College in 1947. After graduating with her B.S. degree in 1948, Sumlin transferred her AKA membership to the Beta Eta Omega Chapter in Dayton. She earned her M.A. degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. As a high school teacher, guidance counselor, community counselor and secondary principal, after her retirement, she worked as an industrial consultant for Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Her involvement in civic, educational and professional services brought many awards and citations, including an honorary Doctorate of Humanities from Central State University.
