520 |a Civil rights activist and newspaper publishing chief executive Rosetta Miller-Perry was born on July 7, 1934 in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. Miller-Perry earned her B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Memphis in 1956 and her D.M.S. degree from John A. Gumpton School of Mortuary Science in 1957. In Nashville, Miller-Perry worked closely with attorney Z. Alexander Looby and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. She was a United States Civil Rights Commission field representative in 1968 and became Nashville Area Director of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from 1980 to 1990. Perry founded Contempora magazine in 1990 and the Tennessee Tribune newspaper in 1992. She established the Greater Nashville Black Chamber of Commerce (GNBCC) in 1998 and created the Anthony J. Cebrun Journalism Center for Youth in partnership with Dell Computers. The Rosetta I. Miller Scholarship at Memphis State University was created in her honor and the Rosetta Miller-Perry Award is presented annually at the Nashville Film Festival.
