He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1968 and received his B.A. degree in journalism from the University of Detroit in 1972. That same year, Keith became state capitol bureau correspondent for The Detroit News and was a frequent commentator on the "Off The Record" television show. From 1988 to 2005, Keith served as features writer, copy editor, business editor, assistant managing editor, public editor, senior editor and columnist for The Detroit News. He received the Distinguished Faculty Award from Wayne State University in 1987 and was inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame in 1995. He accepted the Ameritech Living the Dream Trailblazer Award in 1999. Inspired by bluesman, Luther Allison, in 1981, Keith started playing blues and performs internationally as Luther "Badman" Keith. In 2006, Keith founded and served as executive director of Arise Detroit.
