520 |a Artist Nick Cave was born February 4, 1959, in Fulton, Missouri. In 1979, Cave began studying with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre and then enrolled in the Kansas City Art Institute where he received his B.F.A. in 1981. Agter graduating, he designed displays for Macy's, and worked as a fashion designer. He earned his M.F.A. degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 1989. Cave joined the faculty of the School of The Art Institute of Chicago where he became a department chair. He built a reputation from his performances using ritualistic costumes called "Soundsuits," which change their meaning depending on the environment, movement or group choreography. Cave served as director of the graduate fashion program at the Art Institute of Chicago, and his assemblage sculptures have been featured in exhibitions in The Arts Connexion in Amsterdam, Holland, and Kestener Museum in Hannover, Germany.
