Summary:Educator Lionel McMurren was born in Harlem, New York on October 21, 1925. Drafted into World War II, McMurren was forced to postpone his education. Upon his return, he quickly earned his A.B. degree from Brooklyn College in 1949, his M.S. degree from City College of New York in 1950 and his Ph.D. degree in education administration in 1980 from Fordham University. McMurren began teaching in 1954, at the same junior high that he had attended, Frederick Douglass. He spent most of his career there, eventually serving as principal for thirteen years. In 1982, McMurren was deputy superintendent of schools for New York and he remained in that post until retirement in 1986. McMurren was active in a number of organizations, including more than sixty years of service to St. Mark's Methodist Church. McMurren passed away on January 22, 2012 at age 86.
