520 |a Social worker Maycie Herrington was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, on November 7, 1918. After high school, Herrington financed her education at St. Augustine's College, earning her B.S. degree from there in 1940. In 1943, the Army assigned her husband, Aaron, to Tuskegee, Alabama for pilot training. Herrington joined her husband in Tuskegee. Shortly after the war, they moved to Long Beach, California where Herrington became a social worker with the California Bureau of Public Assistance. An active volunteer, Herrington was a member of the Long Beach Altrusa Club and the African American Heritage Society of Long Beach. She also developed biographical Tuskegee Airmen trading cards that helped finance the local Tuskegee Airmen's youth education programs. Herrington was the recipient of the Hannah G. Solomon Award, the Women Helping Women Award and the Rick Racker Woman of the Year Award. Herrington passed away on May 24, 2016 at age 97.
