Description
Summary:The records contain primarily the handwritten journals and lists of Elizabeth ""Betsy"" McCandless, a member of the Simmons College Class of 1971 and a victim of family violence, written during the period July to December 1992 when she was trying desperately to hide from her abusive and threatening husband. The notes and lists provide frightening details of McCandless's abuse and attemps to hide. She was shot to death near her apartment in Brighton, MA on December 15, 1992 by her husband, Sean J. Murray, who also killed himself. The collection also includes various newspaper clippings relating to her death, as compiled by her brother, Stephen P. McCandless. The Betsy McCandless Memorial Fund sponsors The Clothesline Project at Simmons College each year and also provides funding for ""Betsy's Friends,"" a program to train Simmons' students to be peer educators on relationship violence.
