They may have full-time jobs, families to raise, and household responsibilities that demand their time. Returning to school can be looked at as a threat to the status quo in some families, adding additional burdens to adult women in college. Add to this learning a new language and a new culture and the challenges seem insurmountable, but many women not only return to college, they excel. This qualitative study examined adult women at Bunker Hill Community College. The women in the study are English Language Learners (ELL) pursuing allied health certificate and degree programs and the majority of the women are non-traditional aged students. Issues that were examined include: Factors that drive women with English as their second language to persist in completing allied health certificate and associate degree programs at a community college; How students persist while overcoming the challenges of learning a new language and struggling with the cultural issues of assimilating to a new country; What supports that can be put in place to help women succeed. This study benefits ELL by evaluation of the support systems inside and outside of community colleges that help non-English speaking women succeed in their pursuit of an education and the benefits that provides for their families and the community. This study also contributes to the understanding of adult learning and the benefits of strong support systems that help students succeed, including the need for strong faculty and staff support in the community colleges. The results of the study have indicated that this support is an important and vital component to the success of the women in this study.
