Description
Summary:This thesis examines the Cooperative Artists Institute's Peace Drum Project, a yearlong after-school program that works with at-risk youth in the arts, to demonstrate the impact meaningful out-of-school time experiences can have on urban youth of color. Looking at the history of the program through an investigation of past newspaper articles, CAI and government documentation, as well as interviews and surveys with the teens, seniors, and staff, it produces a narrative history of CAI's Peace Drum Project. This historical examination outlines the impact arts have on community development, violence prevention, at-risk youth, and education, as well as the contributions CAI has had on urban Boston communities. It examines the ways in which the teens become community activists, critical thinkers, and empowered learners through the Peace Drum Project's after school curriculum. Using CAI and the Peace Drum Project as examples of successful after school programming it demonstrates the importance the use of everyday creativity and the arts have in engaging youth in critical pedagogy, healing broken communities, and promoting healthy community development.
