520 | |a Garland Junior College (GJC), a private urban college in Boston for women which offered Associate in Science Degrees in Homemaking and Art, had its beginnings in 1872 when Mary Garland established her Garland Kindergarten Training School. It was one of the first such schools to offer kindergarten teacher training, with the focus shifting in the early 1900s to homemaking. In 1903, the name changed to Garland School of Homemaking (GSH). Margaret J. Stannard was the second director, 1901-1930; Gladys Beckett Jones, president 1930-1962; Frederic B. Viaux, president 1962-1970; Canon G. Gardner Monks, interim president 1970-1971; Alice Thurston, president 1971-1975; and Sarah Broadrick-Allen, president 1975-1976. GSH was authorized as a junior college in 1948 and began granting the AS degree. In March 1976, economic shifts resulted in a vote by the Board of Trustees to transfer the GJC name, physical facilities on Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, and certain other assets to Simmons College. GJC graduated its last class of ninety-eight students in May 1976. | ||
