Summary:The South End Dispensary and Hospital (Boston) provided free medical and surgical care to residents of the area (with a $1.00 fee for those who could pay). It served an average of 1,500 patients a year, some by house calls. Dr. Freeman L. Lowell ran the dispensary from his home from 1906 to ca. 1924. The bulk of the collection consists of his general correspondence (1911-1923) with many leading Bostonians and his applications to agencies such as the Massachusetts Department of Health.
