| Summary: | Zilpha Drew Smith (ZDS), social worker and educator, was involved in many aspects of social welfare in Boston from 1872-1918. ZDS was the Head Registrar and General Secretary of the Associated Charities, a city wide network of charity organizations, from its founding in 1879 to 1903. In 1888, ZDS along with Charles W. Birtwell formed the Monday Evening Club, a discussion group for social workers. She became the Assistant Director of the Boston School for Social Workers (later the Simmons College School of Social Work) in 1904. The collection contains various published and unpublished writings by ZDS including case histories, materials on the education of social workers, special papers and statistics compiled for an exhibit at the Paris Exposition in 1900 and papers and lectures delivered at Boston School for Social Workers and National Conference of Charities and Correction.
