Often she wished she had a dog, for she had a natural sympathy with animals, and dogs seemed to love and trust her instinctively. Bron, Margery and the others were camping on Nordy Bank, the site of an ancient Iron Age fort, but ever since they had been there Bron, usually so good-natured, had become truculent and unfriendly. She could not understand this strange, withdrawn feeling inside herself, nor her wild, confused feelings of pity and hatred when a wolf-like Alsatian crept up to the camp in search of food. Margery, her best friend, could not understand the change in her either, though she had heard about people being 'possessed' by the spirit of their ancestors.
